June 3 - Still in Ketchikan

When we last updated the blog I was sitting in this same laundromat. After I finished writing the blog the delightful couple we had met here, John and Mary, invited us over to their boat for  glass of wine. Seemed like old times to be back aboard a sailboat. Garry was able to help John with a question he had about "The Cap'n" electronic charting. They left the next day heading North. We hope to see them again when we get to Anchorage as they have a house there.
On Tuesday, June 2, I did the Zipline through the rainforest. What an adventure! I was nervous the entire time but I did it!!!! We were well strapped in and all we had to do was "sit" in the hraness and lift our feet. Easy enough to say but very hard to do. At times we were on a zipline  170 feet in the air. On the longest zip we were going about 35 mph. We did 7 ziplines and 3 suspension bridges. I found the bridges harder to do than the ziplines. Our guides were fantastic but at one point when one of them  reached out to touch a tree while we were standing on the bridge and got the bridge to sway I was ready to choke him! I just wanted to get across while he kept stopping and asking us to look DOWN at different flora/fauna etc. LOOK  DOWN - ARE YOU CRAZY???? I am so proud of myself for doing it. It really was a great time. However I did remain nervous the whole time. Garry stayed below but because the zip was in a protected nature  habitat he wasn't able to get in there to take any pictures of me UP there.
Later that afternoon we went to the other side of the town and found a wonderful, wooded U.S.F.S. campground where we decided to spend the night. It was on Ward Lake and we had the best intentions to hike around the lake. However I think once the adrenaline high I was on stopped I just crashed and was so tired all I wanted to  do was take a nap which we both ended up doing.
Later that evening there was a knock on our door and we saw Frank and Irene (We had met them at the Campground in Larrabee, WA) standing outside. They had just parked in the space next to us. It was fun to see them. The guys got to talking and it was decided that the next morning (Yesterday) we would split the cost on renting a 16' skiff to take out fishing. Neither Frank nor Garry has had very good luck as most of  the people catching fish are out in boats. So we were up early and out in the boat by 8AM. Unfortunately the guys still didn't catch anything although they both had several nibbles and a lot of bait taken. We saw lots of sea lions out there and several eagles. Off in the distance we noticed a dark shape that we couldn't quite make out. It seemed to be getting bigger and we finally realized that it was a Nuclear Submarine surfacing. Way cool. The weather turrned absolutely horrible very  quickly with 15 knot winds and torrential rain and   wind. Irene and I were miserable. We headed back in and by the time we were back at the dock we were all soaked and cold. We packed everything up and headed to the nearest laundromat to put everything in the dryer. Nothing worse than being in a small space with wet clothes hanging and dripping everywhere.
We were back in our preferred space at the Safeway parking lot last night. It was still windy and there was a large flock of Ravens and 3 -4 eagles squabbling over something in the water right in front of us. Turned out to be some kind of a styrofoam float that they were all fighting over. It was interesting to see how they manuvered in the wind and how ruffled  their feathers got. There are Wednesday night sailboat  races held out in the Harbor. Only 2 boats participated but it was fun to watch.
This morning we topped off the gas and water  tanks and emptied the other tanks as we are taking a ferry at 2 this afternoon to our next port which will be Wrangall. I din't know if we will have cell/internet access there so will update this when we are able. The weather has been awful the last 2 days so we hope it will improve in Wrangall.
